Our institute

Education built for
real practice.

The United States Trichology Institute teaches beauty and health professionals the science of hair and scalp care, then helps them put that knowledge to work with the people in their chair.

Who we are

A school founded by
practicing professionals.

The United States Trichology Institute

USTI was founded to give hair care and medical professionals the education they need to help their clients with hair loss and scalp issues, and to help you build a business around helping people while growing your business.

USTI closes a gap that many professionals feel every day: clients ask serious questions about hair loss and scalp health, and the answers are rarely taught in cosmetology, barbering school or even medical school.

USTI's programs empower students with the practical knowledge they need to answer those questions and provide the tools they need to help their clients regrow their hair and solve their scalp issues.

USTI brings structure to what you already observe. You study the biology of hair and scalp, learn how to document what you see, understand the limits of your scope, and know how best to help a client.

Classes are led by certified trichologists and clinical educators, and every course is designed around practical use rather than theory alone.

Recognized certification

USTI programs are recognized as the world's most respected* and have certification recognized by the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA), with credentials you can show clients with confidence.

* K18 says USTI is recognized as the largest and most respected trichology institute in the world.

William C. Blatter

Founder of USTI, HLCC, and XTC

AMCA Trichologist of the Year. Board of Directors, US Trichology Institute and Global Dermatology Institute.

William C. Blatter is an internationally known educator and speaker in the trichology, laser hair loss, and hair loss industries. He founded the largest trichology school and has personally trained more than 4,000 students, including doctors, trichologists, and hair loss professionals, on trichology, hair loss, scalp issues, lasers, and product technology. He has taught from Singapore to Kuwait to Europe and around the world. For 40 years, his work has grown from a single location to more than 1,500 affiliated clinics in over 40 countries.

Why He Started USTI

Mr. Blatter founded the US Trichology Institute because he kept meeting students who weren't getting the education they needed. Many older institutes still taught from materials written in the 1970s, and once the course ended, students were on their own. He built USTI to do it differently. Every USTI student gets:

  • Lifetime support after graduation
  • Live Q&A webinars
  • Ongoing training as the science and technology change

His goal is simple: he wants his students to succeed. That means helping their clients get real results and building a business that lasts. For a clinic owner, that support is practical. When a difficult case walks in or a client asks a question you can't answer, you have somewhere to turn, and your practice keeps growing because your knowledge keeps growing.

Education and Research

Mr. Blatter earned a Bachelor of Science from Siena College and did postgraduate work at the Miami School of Dermatology. His research has produced several published clinical studies on combination hair loss treatments and on Growth Factors+. He works with researchers around the world, including Angela M. Christiano, PhD, of NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia University Medical Center, and Dr. Shin of Korea, the world's foremost protein engineer.

Leadership and Recognition

He is a certified trichologist through both the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA) and the US Trichology Institute (USTI). He serves as president of Hair Loss Control Clinic (HLCC), founder and chairman of the USTI board, and a board member of both the Global Dermatology Institute and the Association of Trichology Professionals. He speaks at international trichology conferences in cities including Dubai, Buenos Aires, San Antonio, and Kuwait.

He has appeared on Fox News' Focus, ABC's Good Morning Dallas, and CBS News in New Orleans, along with national health radio shows, podcasts, and trade journals. He speaks every year at the Premiere Orlando Beauty Show and has presented at American Beauty Shows, the American Hair Loss Council, and World Anti-Aging shows in Las Vegas, New York City, and Germany.

Our third-party certification

National certification you
can stand behind.

USTI offers testing and national medical certifications created and certified by the independent American Medical Certification Association (AMCA). The AMCA grants certifications only to schools and associations that meet its standards for curriculum and testing, so states, hospitals, and doctors can trust the credentials of the people they hire.

The AMCA administers national certification exams for career, technical, post-secondary, and higher education institutions, including certifications for phlebotomy and EKG technicians and for medical and mental health technicians.

Every USTI student sits for an AMCA-certified test that is scored and certified by the AMCA. The cost of AMCA certification is included in the class fee, and graduates receive certification from both USTI and the AMCA.
